Toyota has started working with Ford on Smart Device Link, an open source version of Fords AppLink. The idea is providing third party apps with a platform to develop apps once which will then work across multiple platforms...

Toyota, the world’s largest automaker, will explore working with Ford on integrating smartphone applications into future vehicles, the two companies said in e-mailed statements. Ford says its SmartDeviceLink technology allows companies like Pandora Inc. to develop apps only once for use in multiple infotainment systems, while also allowing carmakers to control the design of their dashboards.

About time. Can't wait to see how this shakes out.
Looks like we're going to have a group of manufacturers persuing one avenue and a bunch of other ones going in the other direction. My question is do we eventually see a tipping point where developers decide we want to be on SDL or we want to be on Android Auto and thats it?

Tough to say at this point, quite early in the entire process.
